چکیده

________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When nasal is more than nasal: Oral articulation of French nasal vowels Lingual and labial articulations of oral and nasal vowels of three Metropolitan French (FM) speakers were recorded using an EMA system. Inter-speaker variation in these oral articulations suggest that the role of motor equivalence is important in the acoustic dispersion of this vowel system: the speakers have a similar acoustic output, but use different articulatory strategies to achieve this output. Perception of Québec French Nasal Vowels by Brazilian Learners: a Pilot Study

This pilot study aims at comparing the phonetic structure of Québec French (QF) and Brazilian Portuguese (BP) nasal vowels and at assessing the perception of QF nasal vowels by BP learners. It is shown that the structure of the phonetic systems of these vowels is different in QF and BP, and hence has an influence on the cross-linguistic perception (identification) of QF nasal vowels. More speci...

Oral Articulation of Nasal Vowels in French

EMA, aerodynamic, and acoustic signals were combined in order to observe lingual and labial articulation of oral and nasal vowels in Northern Metropolitan French (NMF) and Quebec French (QF). Inter-speaker variation observed in oral articulation suggests the importance of motor equivalence in the acoustic dispersion of each vowel system. Inter-dialectal differences observed are suggestive of im...

Interspeaker Variation in the Articulation of Nasal Vowels

The articulation of the four French nasal vowels and their oral counterparts has been investigated for four speakers, using magnetic resonance images of the three-dimensional oral and nasal tracts and the cross-sectional velar opening areas. The analysis suggests that the subjects’ anatomy in the oral and nasal tracts influences the articulation, with intersubject differences in both the vocal ...

Velar Movements for Two French Speakers

This study compares velar movements for nasal vowels and consonants; it investigates contextual nasalisation; and it provides new data on how nasalisation is affected by speech rate. Velar position is measured with an electromagnetic articulatograph (EMA) for two French speakers. Our results confirm that (i) nasal vowels are produced with a lower velum height than nasal consonants; (ii) the con...

The role of the pharynx and tongue in enhancement of vowel nasalization: a real-time MRI investigation of French nasal vowels

Complexity in the acoustics of nasal vowels has long been acknowledged but complexity in their articulation has received less attention. A growing body of research suggests that velopharyngeal (VP) opening is complemented by other articulatory gestures which may enhance or counteract the acoustic outcomes of VP opening. In this paper we consider the role of pharyngeal aperture and lingual posit...
